Colposcopy
What is a Colposcopy?
A colposcopy is a way your doctor can examine your genitals, vagina and cervix closely. A colposcope
is an instrument that shines a light on the cervix and magnifies the view for your doctor. At the beginning
of the exam, your doctor will apply vinegar, using cotton balls, to the cervix and vagina. The vinegar
helps your doctor identify areas that may need further evaluation.
During the colposcopic exam, a biopsy may also be performed. Your doctor removes a small piece of tissue
from your cervix to be looked at by a doctor called a pathologist. This procedure can take about 15-20 minutes.
