Cornerstone Inpatient Services
Cornerstone Health Care's Inpatient Services is a program designed to enhance
your experience as a hospital patient. We have several physicians on our staff that are based in
High Point Regional Hospital and are dedicated to your care throughout your inpatient admission.
These board-certified internal medicine specialists, referred to as "Hospitalists", represent a
new development in medical care that Cornerstone and High Point Regional Hospital introduced to
our community. For the past several years, Hospitalists have joined the medical staffs at
hospitals across the nation. The results of this system of patient care have been universally
positive, with an overall improvement in patient satisfaction with the care they receive during
their hospital stay.
If you are admitted to the hospital by your primary care physician, he or
she will call Cornerstone's Inpatient Services to share all the pertinent information about
your medical condition. The Hospitalist will then meet you in the Emergency Department or your
hospital room and immediately begin your inpatient treatment plan. If you have an emergency and
go directly to the Emergency Room, the Emergency Department physician will see you initially
and then notify the Hospitalist to continue your plan of care.
Once you are admitted, the Hospitalists become your personal physicians
throughout your hospital stay. The Hospitalist Inpatient Service consults with your primary care
physician to become fully aware of your medical history and current condition. The Hospitalists
are available to you, day and night, during your hospital stay. This constant contact allows them
to make frequent, first-hand appraisals of your condition and timely, informed decisions on
the course of your care. If a specialty consultation (such as cardiology, orthopaedics,
pulmonary, neurology, or general surgery) is needed, the Hospitalist Inpatient Service will
coordinate that care. Upon discharge, you will be referred back to your primary care doctor
for consistent follow-up care. The Hospitalist will share information regarding your hospital
stay with your primary care physician.
You also benefit from the Hospitalist Inpatient Service when you visit your
primary care physician's office. With the hospitalist team admitting his or her Emergency
Room patients, your physician no longer must leave the office in the middle of a busy day. This
will eliminate the inconvenience of waiting for your doctor to return from an unscheduled
visit to the hospital.
Your primary care physician will be happy to answer any questions you may have about Cornerstone's
Inpatient Services.
Hospitalists are internal medicine specialists, trained in their medical
education to handle the specific conditions for which patients are most routinely hospitalized.
They treat these conditions with great frequency, allowing them to detect subtle changes in
a patient's condition and their response to treatment. Their relationship as colleagues
of your primary care physician assures open communication and an ongoing commitment to your
health in and out of the hospital.
